LitFest 2025
Theme: BOOKS THAT TEACH US ABOUT CHARACTER
What can books teach us about character? The people in literary works face moral dilemmas—choosing between personal gain and doing the right thing, whatever the consequences. Fictional heroes often explore the boundaries of character, asking us which traits we deem noble. The same choices and internal struggles appear in nonfiction works such as biographies or histories, deepened by the impact of character on the real world. Looking at character in books helps us stay true to our values, even in the most threatening of circumstances. By immersing ourselves in the stories of others—be they true or imagined—we develop a stronger moral compass and a deeper understanding of how to live with character.
“We read books to find out who we are. What other people, real or imaginary, do and think and feel... is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become.”
— Ursula K. LeGuin
Save The Date: LitFest 2025 will take place at Mountain View Mausoleum on Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 4th, 2025.
We host LitFest in the Dena in the lovely Mountain View Mausoleum, designed by Cecil E. Bryan, the renowned pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright. Its long corridors, arched ceilings, marble surfaces, and intricate stained-glass windows spill rainbows of light onto the walls and floors. This magnificent mausoleum is as much a work of art as it is a historic resting place. Though Cecil E. Bryan designed more than eighty mausoleums throughout his lifetime, he considered Mountain View Mausoleum his masterpiece. So much so that when he passed away in 1951, it was there that he chose to be interred. And it’s not very hard to see why.We are ever so lucky to hold our event in this stunning venue.
